Limited functionality with newer iPods
I bought this after reading through the reviews here as well as the full specs on the Sony site, but was still disappointed with the result. While it does the basics just fine, I think there are cheaper options out there that do the same things. The first (and easiest) criticism is the actual display on the screen if you're viewing the audio contents on your TV. It looks like a basic DOS display; don't expect fancy graphics, album art, or for that matter anything at all other than block letters. Given that it's built with a specific connector for other Sony products (the DMPort) and I was connecting through my Sony DA5300ES receiver, I expected more. The other problems I encountered were because I have the latest (4g) Nano. When I first connected the Nano, its screen indicated that it was connected but that charging wasn't supported with this peripheral. (I've since learned on an Apple forum why, it's certainly not limited to this dock.) Other than that, the connection worked fine and the iPod display showed that it was connected. On my TV screen I had the standard audio lists from the iPod: Playlists, Artists, Songs, etc. Scrolling through this, it was easy enough to play a song. I didn't see Podcasts as a menu item, but it may have been buried in the Playlists section or something. On the other hand, despite playing around with it a little there wasn't a way to output videos or pictures through the DMPort with the 4g Nano. Not supported, although that's not entirely clear in the Amazon product description (which just says that it's compatible with "5g/4g/nano/mini," leading me to believe my current Nano was compatible). The dock came packaged with a video output cable, which I didn't try because that would involve running a separate cable to my TV and choosing that input to see the pictures on my TV while choosing the audio input on my stereo to hear the music... which would get rid of the benefit of just having one HDMI cable as the connection between my stereo and TV. In short, I probably expected more from this dock based on its price and pedigree, but it was only good for the very basics. If you're primarily interested in getting audio through your stereo and aren't too worried about forward compatibility, this may be okay, but if that's the case there are probably cheaper options that will work just as well.
Difficult to Operate
I bought this dock to go with my Sony Bravia tv because it was the only one I could find that was guaranteed compatible. My issue is this: I cannot for the life of me run the video through the tv. This means no on-screen menu and no remote- I have to work the ipod manually which is an enourmous step backward from the seperate Apple dock/speaker set I had before. When I called for support, the good people at Sony told me my ipod must be malfunctioning because there is no "video out" setting on it. Apple says there isn't supposed to be... It looks nice, it charges the ipod and plays it through the television speakers, but the instructions are virtuously useless and no one can sort out my technical difficulties...
dwho
This dock works with iPod but not iPhone. But it makes for great music from my SONY ES amplifier.
Great with Sony Theater
I have the Sony SA-WCT100 Theater system. This is the best way to connect your I-POD to this system. It is very easy to do.
Okay, but nothing too speacial
I bought this and have had it for a while now. It works; does what it is supposed to. It's just nothing special. Prior to owning this, I just had RCA cords that had an adaptor that plugged into my iPod. That set up worked fine. With this item, the iPod charges, which is cool. Through a semi-complicated set up, I can get the video to work on the TV. Controlling the iPod through the receiver works, but the functionality of this gets frustrating. Not all of the normal iPod categories are there (notably, Podcasts). Also, when you have a couple hundred artists, scrolling to the one you want is a pain. It will start by scrolling slowly, and then go lightning fast until you are way past what you are looking for. Oh, and the menu is just plain ugly. You can not watch video when using the receiver to control it. You can switch this function off, and then it will work. But, then you're basically paying $75 or more for an iPod charger and a video cord (not included). So, all in all, the thing works. I can't say I would spend the money to buy it again. It looks nice, though.
