Customer Reviews for Philips 50PF9631D 50-Inch Plasma HDTV with ambilight

Do Not Buy a Phillips TV

We bought a Phillips plasma TV and it had constant problems. Finally after less than two years old, it died, and we were told by Phillips that it canot be fixed because they no longer make the necessary part. Now we are stuck with a big piece of junk that cost over $2000.00 less than 2 years ago. Horrible company and products.

Best HDTV out there for the money.

My wife and I just moved into our newly built house, which we designed with our electronics needs in mind. We ditched the lousy reception from dish network, and had the entire house wired for Comcast, which provides a crystal-clear (and MUCH more stable) picture. This Philips was installed over the fireplace (we made sure the heat wouldn't bother it), hooked it up via HDMI to a new TiVo Series 3 with Lifetime, and haven't looked back. Picture quality is like nothing we've seen before on any TV, and sound quality is excellent as well. Highly recommended!

Excellent TV

I bought this TV in December and I love it !! The picture far exceeds what I expected and the sound is 1st rate. The only down side is the remote, it is uncomfortable to hold and practically impossible to use with just one hand. Delivery was excellent, it came 2 days before the estimated time and they not only brought it into my home but unpacked it and helped me inspect it for shipping damage (none). Then they hauled away the packing materials!

Great Plasma for the $$$$

The overall purchasing experience through Amazon was great and the free shipping sealed the deal. The TV itself has a beautiful picture both with HD & SD signals. We just installed dishnetwork and their signal quality exceeds comcast, it is more noticable on the SD channels, and HD is just crystal clear. The ambilight will make it hard to purchase any other HDTV, is just adds alot to the overall experience. The only negative was mounting it on the wall. It is heavy and a awkward to handle so three people are essential in mounting this set. Overall very pleased with this TV, for the money it is a great buy.

Excellent HD, but requires work to get SD shows to look decent

If you use the Amazon delivery service, make sure they have your correct phone number. Our shipment was delayed while the shipper tried to track us down. When the shipper arrived at our house, the delivery man was happy to unpack the TV, but we had to request he help us set it up so we could determine that it worked correctly. The TV is fairly heavy and is DEFINITELY a 2 person lift, however, the delivery person was by himself. If it was just my wife at home, we wouldn't have been able to set it up. We've had the TV for a week now and have it connected to an HD DVR from our cable company. The HD channels are amazing and we're quite happy with the ambilight feature. I don't think we'd be able to change to an HD TV without this feature after we've gotten used to it. Some of the standard definition channels come in okay, but some were pretty poor. Then we did some tweaking of the picture format and it made all the difference. The automatic function for the picture format just didn't cut it for most of the SD channels. Now that we're aware of this, it's not much of a problem to get a good SD picture using the manual format selection menu. The person who designs Philips remote controls should be fired. The remote control looks very chic, but it's an ergonomic failure. It doesn't fit into mine or my wife's hand. It's long and doesn't facilitate easy button reach. The sides are sharp and the corners are pointed -- not a device that you want to hold onto while changing channels etc, but it'd probably make a good weapon if you wanted to stab someone. Thankfully, our cable box remote control is just the opposite and it'll control just about all of the TV functions. So we just put the Philips remote in the cabinet until we absolutely need it. We're quite happy with the TV and can't wait until all channels go to HD. The HD channels are so good, we find ourselves just mezmerized by how clear and bright all the colors are.
