Black metal fans, fear not--the men of Dethklok have returned to make your world a little darker (and funnier) with Season 2 of the animated series Metalocalypse. Though the show is as densely plotted--often to absurd levels--as any Adult Swim program, and riddled with inside references to the metal scene (from which spring many of the guest vocal talents, including members of Metallica, Dimmu Borgir and Arch Enemy), one doesn't have to be a fan of either to enjoy the show. It does help, however, to have an appreciation for dark humor, as the season opener, "Dethecution" illustrates; having survived the near-fatal attack by their nemeses, a military cabal called the Tribunal, Dethklok decides to return to public life by giving a concert that doubles as a mass execution for 200 death-row inmates. Dramatic changes like this--and the mayhem that follows them--are the crux of Metalocalypse's second season, and include guitarist Toki taking lessons from an ancient master to up his value to the band ("Dethlessons"), an ill-advised trip to the Amazon in search of hallucinogenic drugs (a terrific Herzog spoof titled--what else?-- "Dethcarraldo"), drummer Pickles' disastrous reunion with his former flash metal band (the two-part "Snakes 'N Barrels), and the cliffhanger conclusion, which finds Dethklok releasing its latest album at the same time the former fans-turned-terrorists known as the Revengencers launch an all-out assault on them ("Dethrelease"). Burning questions in regard to the origins of the buffoonish Dr. Rockso and Nathan's love life are also addressed, and fans get a deeper glimpse into the band's lunatic lives, most notably in the hilarious "Dethwedding," which introduces Pickles' deadbeat brother Seth. Again, enjoyment of the show is entirely dependent on one's tolerance for absurd and often crude humor, but its lampooning of rock excess remains as sharply focused as ever. As with the first season set, the extras are strewn about the two-disc set in the form of Easter Eggs, though they're not particularly hard to find on the main and episode selection menus. Once located, fans will find everything from extended scenes and videos for "Mermaider" and "Bloodrocuted" to clips of the band reading excerpts from Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus" or simply listing other metal outfits they like. Each are clever in their own way, and do much to underscore Metalocalypse's party-till-you-explode aesthetic. --Paul Gaita
content great, DVD not great
Great content, but the DVD doesn't work right. A few episodes stop in the middle, and the menu doesn't work right. It is like the content is too long for the DVD and it just ends. But, since I bought this along with season 1, and a few weeks before a birthday as a gift, by the time we found out the problem the window for returns was over! So, we are stuck with a incomplete second season. So, if you buy one, watch it right away in case something is wrong.
TWISTED HUMOR
Metalocalypse is a disaster. But it's a great one. It's basically a fairy tale about a death-metal band ( that also happens to be a real band, in the real world... put together by Brendon Small..., the same guy who created the Adult Swim series called Home Movies ), called Dethklok, and the their total failure at everything they try to do, except playing their special brand of music. That's the one thing they're good at. But , despite their naive and childish views of the world and their self-centered focus on their desires, from wanting to be fashion designers, public relations experts, politicans, to playing practical jokes on each other all the time, they are basically well-meaning guys who do not really want to see people get hurt and prefer not to engage in violence ( at least not against innocent bystanders or their fans ) ..., though they sing about bloodshed, death and violence at every concert. Their fans, in the series, are another matter. They are lunatics and often end up dying in a bloodbath due to some unforseen problem at a Dethklok concert. Every episode has a short animated music video vocaled by Brendon Small, who also plays guitar. There are a lot of blood and guts splattering around in this series, there are also scenes of torture and lots of bad language. So, why do I recommend it? Because it's a great satire of real "metal" bands and their obnoxious excessive lifestyles. These guys are so dumb at everything except music, you can't help but laugh as they simply try to do ordinary things, like go shopping..., and totally screw it up. Interesting note; Mark Hamil ( of Star Wars fame ) , and veteran actor Malcolm McDowell perform many of the voice overs for characters ( other than the band members ) , in this series. Brendon Small voices three of the band characters, ( Nathan Explosion, Skwisgarr, and Pickles ) and also voices the band's manager ( Charles Foster Offdensen). The disks worked very well. In fact the aspect ratio is for widescreen, which is the first time I've seen this in an animated series. The audio was excellent, especially during the music videos. - Mike S.
